Walked into a barbershop on 5th in Austin after 6 months on my own and the old guy critiqued my fade for 20 minutes
I went solo back in March and hadn't stepped foot in another barber's chair since, so last Tuesday I popped into a place on 5th in Austin just to get a trim and watch how they run things. The owner, Ray, spent 20 minutes picking apart my fade and showed me I was holding my clippers at the wrong angle the whole time, which honestly stung but fixed my blurry lines overnight. How do you guys handle getting critiqued by other barbers when you've been working alone for a while?
Got laughed at by a guy named Sal in a shop off Cesar Chavez about three years back. He watched me do one cut and pointed out how my wrist was flat against the head, said I was fighting the curve of the skull instead of following it. I was mad for two days, then tried his way on a walk-in and the taper came out cleaner than anything I'd done in months. Sometimes it takes a stranger's eyes to spot the one habit you stopped noticing (I still hold my breath on the first guideline pass, drives me nuts).
