Dropped $85 on a "premium" straight razor honing service and it shaved worse than my $12 beater
Sent my grandfather's old straight razor to a guy in Denver who charges $85 for a full restore and hone, waited three weeks to get it back, and honestly it pulled so bad I had to finish with my cheap backup. He blamed the steel, said it was a "soft vintage blank," but I ran it on my own 12k stone for ten minutes and it sings now. Ngl I think half these mail-in honing services just run everything on a belt grinder and call it a day. Tbh you're better off learning to set a bevel yourself than paying a stranger who never sees your face again. Anybody got a honemeister they actually trust, or is everyone just doing their own edges now?
