TIL those little bumpy cylinders on cables are ferrite beads and not just weird plastic lumps, after my guitar rig hummed for 2 weeks
I clipped the beads off a cheap USB cable trying to make it fit a tight port and my audio interface started buzzing like a fridge, then a guy at the electronics shop on 5th explained they eat high frequency noise so I bought a $4 snap on one and the hum vanished, has anyone else wrecked a cable not knowing what those lumps actually do?
Ferrite beads are mostly there for FCC compliance so devices dont spew radio noise. cutting one off a random cable probably isnt gonna blow up your gear or anything. the buzz you had couldve just been a ground loop that happened to line up with the timing.
