Dropped $85 on a wire stripper after wrecking 3 controllers, and I get it now
I used to strip wires with my teeth and a pair of dull kitchen scissors, which sounds funny until you fry a $40 game controller and a set of LED strip lights in the same weekend. After the third mess I gave up and bought a real wire stripper for $85 at the hardware place on Route 9 in Poughkeepsie. The guy behind the counter kept saying the cheap $12 ones would do fine, but I went with the one that has the little gauge holes and a crimper built in. First time I used it I sat there for a minute just staring at the clean cut, no copper nicked, no insulation chewed up. I wired up a whole shelf of lights in my garage in about 20 minutes with zero swear words, which is a personal record. Now I keep it in the top drawer and my brother keeps borrowing it, so I need a second one. Has anyone tried the auto-adjusting kind, and does it actually grip small gauge wire or does it just slip?
