Shoutout to the 1997 magazine at my dentist's office in Tacoma that promised we'd all have flying cars by 2020
I was sitting in the waiting room in Tacoma getting a filling done when I picked up a 1997 issue of some old tech mag. There was a whole spread predicting that by 2020 every family would own a personal flying car and traffic jams would be a thing of the past. It said the average commute would drop to 12 minutes because we'd all just zip over the highways. Meanwhile I sat there for 45 minutes past my appointment time because their scheduling software crashed twice. The funny part is the same article said computers would never fit in a pocket. I showed it to the hygienist and she laughed and said her phone does more than that whole magazine predicted. What old prediction did you stumble on somewhere random like that?
Laughed way too hard at the scheduling software crashing twice, that part really ties the whole thing together. I had something like that happen at a Jiffy Lube in 2019 where the waiting room had a 1988 Popular Science saying we'd all be on moon vacations by now. My favorite part was the article claiming cordless phones were just a fad since nobody would want to carry a phone around with them. That hygienist nailed it though, her phone probably runs circles around every gadget that magazine dreamed up.
