Tried to draw my dog from memory at 1am and got a raccoon with a thyroid problem
Last Tuesday I sat down at my kitchen table in Boise around 1am with a sketchpad and a mug of decaf, feeling weirdly sure I could nail my beagle from memory. Twenty minutes later I had a gremlin with ears like a fruit bat and one eye twice the size of the other, and my wife walked by at 6am and asked why I'd drawn a raccoon with a thyroid problem. I learned the hard way that faces live in the front of your brain and vanish the second you try to pull them out cold, so now I keep one blurry phone photo on the table for reference. The part that stings is I actually like the ugly thing, it's got a weird charm, but it looks NOTHING like him. Does anyone else get better results working from a reference or am I just fooling myself thinking memory is faster?
