Wire bundle lacing is dying and that worries me

I worked a heavy check last month and two junior guys asked why I was using waxed cord, they had only ever used zip ties and spiral wrap. The tie wraps are fine for installs but on a 30 year old airframe with vibration, lacing spreads the load and lets you find chafing early before it becomes a $4,000 cannon plug replacement. Has anyone else noticed this skill fading or am I just the old guy yelling at clouds?
