Booked my own carrier instead of a broker and saved $275 on a Tacoma run to Phoenix

I was getting quotes of $875 from three brokers for a Tacoma from Albuquerque to Phoenix, then I found the actual carrier's dispatch number on the DOT site, called them direct, and paid $600 flat with the truck picked up 2 days later, so now I'm wondering if anyone else skips the middleman or if I just got lucky with a carrier that had an empty slot heading south.
