Warning: I was wrong about skid plates, a rock in Moab changed my mind
Last month I ran the Behind the Rocks trail near Moab and my buddy's bone stock 2019 Polaris Sportsman walked right over a rock ledge that stopped my rig cold. I always figured plastic skids were fine if you picked smart lines, and I'd been riding that way for 3 seasons without a real hit. Then he pointed out his aluminum plate cost him $180 and mine would've been around $420 installed, so I started doing the math on what a cracked engine case would run me. Two weeks later I put the aluminum on and the difference on that same ledge was night and day, I barely felt it scrape. Now I'm second guessing all the other cheap shortcuts I've taken, like the stock tires I've been running at 6 psi in the rocks. What's the one upgrade you put off way too long before finally doing it?
