Rant: I thought mud tires were overkill for trail riding until a weekend at Hatfield McCoy

For the first couple seasons on my Rancher I ran stock tires and slid all over the clay at Hatfield McCoy, especially after rain. Then I put on a set of 27 inch mud tires in March and did the same trails again two weeks later with zero slip on the same hills. Is it just the clay down there that makes the difference, or do stock tires really hold folks back on any wet trail?
