The guy at the Ace on Ponce told me to check my attic boots after every storm, saved me $400
He mentioned it while I was buying a $6 tube of caulk last spring, said the heat up there cracks the rubber and you won't notice until water hits your ceiling. Found a split boot over my dining room two months later and patched it myself instead of paying a roofer. Anyone else got a cheap habit that caught a big problem early?
How often are you actually getting up in the attic to look at those boots though? I ask because that's the part that gets me, the whole thing working depends on you remembering to climb up there in the heat after every storm when honestly most of us forget the attic even exists until something drips. Do you set a reminder or just check whenever you happen to be up there for holiday decorations? And when you found that split one, how bad was it, like a little crack or full on torn? Trying to figure out what I should even be looking for since mine are probably 15 years old by now.
