Saw a photo of Andromeda taken from a Bortle 9 rooftop in Chicago and it flipped my whole view on backyard astro
I always figured shooting deep sky stuff from a big city was a waste of time, so I never bothered trying from my place in Chicago. Then last week a guy in my local club posted his Andromeda shot taken from a Bortle 9 rooftop with just a stock DSLR and a 135mm lens, and he stacked 4 hours of 30 second subs to pull it off. I looked up the numbers and Bortle 9 is the worst class there is, which is why I assumed the target was hopeless without driving 3 hours to a dark site. What got me was that he didn't use any fancy filter, just a lot of short exposures and good processing in Siril to deal with the light pollution glow. I tried 90 minutes on the same galaxy from my balcony a few nights later and while my result was rough, I could actually see the core and some of the dust lanes. Now I'm wondering if I've been wasting clear nights waiting for trips out to dark skies. Has anyone here had luck shooting galaxies from a really light polluted spot, and how many subs did it take you?
