Back when I started, I'd just point my camera at the sky from my backyard in Phoenix. Now I drive an hour out to the desert for every shot.
I used to think light pollution wasn't a big deal, so I'd take 30 second exposures from my driveway. The results were always washed out and grainy. After a really frustrating night trying to capture the Milky Way last spring, I finally drove out past Apache Junction. The difference in star detail was insane. Has anyone else made that switch, and was it worth the extra hassle for you?

Maybe the hassle just isn't for everyone. I've gotten some decent shots from my own neighborhood by just stacking a bunch of shorter exposures and fixing it in post. Gas is expensive, and losing sleep for a long drive back feels like a lot sometimes. The perfect dark sky shot is cool, but getting any shot at all from home has its own reward.

@dakota863, that "any shot at all from home has its own reward" is a good point, but the drive is worth it for detail.
