Hot take: hand tying flies with a whip finisher beats a half hitch every time and I'm done pretending otherwise
I've been tying woolly buggers at my kitchen table in Boise for about 8 years now, and for the first 6 of those I finished every single fly with a half hitch tool because that's what the old guy at the fly shop handed me when I bought my first vise. Last spring I got tired of losing flies on the South Fork when the thread head unraveled after a few casts, so I switched to a whip finisher and tied 40 flies in one sitting. Out of those 40, I've fished maybe 25 and not one thread head has come apart, versus the half hitch where I'd lose 1 in 5 easy. I know the half hitch crowd says it's faster and simpler, but faster doesn't mean much when you're re-tying on the river at dusk. Anyone else make the switch or am I the odd one out here?
