Old search tricks died when I talked to a librarian in Philly

She told me she still uses boolean strings and the library's own catalog over Google. Said web indexes miss the local archives and niche databases. Now I try site: queries plus her method for municipal records. Has anyone else gone back to librarian tricks after years of lazy searching?
