Used to copy site reports by hand in the library, now I zoom into 3D scans from my couch
Back when I took my first field school in 2009, getting a look at a site report meant a trip to the university library and $15 in photocopies. I remember spending a whole Saturday in the basement at the campus library in Flagstaff, hand copying measurements off a report on a pueblo dig because you could not check anything out. Now I pull up photogrammetry models of that same site on my laptop and spin the walls around in about 10 seconds. The part that gets me is how much I missed back then just because a drawing was smudged or someone left out a plan view. Last week I found a hearth feature on a 3D scan that I had walked right past in person years ago. Does anyone else feel like the old paper copies made you appreciate stuff more, or is that just me being sappy about it?
