Trowel vs. mason's trowel on a dig in Santa Fe, and the difference was weird
I did a volunteer dig at a site outside Santa Fe in April, and the crew lead handed out real WHS trowels to half of us and mason's trowels to the rest. I got a mason's trowel on day one and kept slicing through a burned layer without seeing it. My partner with the pointy WHS trowel pulled out a tiny piece of shell temper in the same square that I would have plowed right past. By day three I switched and started finding flake debris everywhere in ground I'd already scraped. The pointed tip lets you feel a change in soil before you wreck it, and the flat edge is way easier to level a floor with. Has anyone else noticed the tool matters more than the paperwork on these community digs? Curious what trowel most of you bring to site.
