That time I stopped trusting field sketches and started photographing everything

Back in the early 2000s, I spent two summers on a dig outside Santa Fe and I'd draw every trench wall by hand, little hatch marks and all. I thought I had a good eye, but last month I pulled out those old notebooks and half my scale bars were off by a foot, no way to fix it now. Now I carry a cheap DSLR and shoot every layer with a ruler in frame, takes ten minutes but saves me from my own bad memory. Did anyone else have to relearn their whole recording system when the older crew finally retired?
