Cleaning a medieval floor tile took me 4 hours. Should have been 20 minutes.
Found a floor tile at a dig near Coventry. Had this thick crust on it. Tried scrubbing with water and a brush for like 2 hours. Barely made a dent. Then a retired guy walks by, says try distilled water and a soft toothpick. Started flaking off in 5 minutes. The rest took maybe another 30 minutes tops. Anyone else spend way too long on simple cleaning methods?

@dixon.daniel he's probably got a whole museum of tips locked in his head. Four hours though, that's a brutal life lesson (the retired dude kind).

Did you at least get a good forearm workout out of those first two hours? I would have been ready to just chip the whole crust off with a screwdriver by that point. That retired guy probably has a whole garage full of weird tricks just like that one. Makes you wonder how many other things we all overcomplicate before someone walks by and says "try it this way instead.
