Am I the only one who hit a clay pot while digging a garden pond?

I was excavating for a small pond and my shovel cracked into what looks like an old storage jar. It's full of dirt and has weird markings on it. I stopped digging right away and took pictures to show the local history society. They think it might be from early settlers, so now my yard work is on hold until they inspect it.

My uncle once dug up a glass medicine bottle from the 1920s under his rose bush.

Actually, that kind of find is super common around old properties. Lots of folks find old bottles like that, especially the plain amber ones from local drug stores. I've seen boxes of them at flea markets for a few bucks each. Without an interesting label or a unique shape, it's often just old trash they tossed in a hole. People used to bury their garbage all the time before regular pick-up.

@dylanf78 is right that many finds are common, but think about the stories behind them. A plain medicine bottle might have helped a sick child long ago. Chipped dinner plates could be from a family's everyday meals. These things aren't just old trash; they show how people lived day to day. Uncovering them gives us a direct link to history we can hold in our hands.
