A retired surveyor's comment about a Roman road rerouted my thinking

I was walking near an old dig outside Chester and this retired surveyor just pointed at a field line, said 'that's not medieval, that's their drainage ditch.' Made me realize context from locals matters more than any textbook. Has anyone else had a chance remark totally flip their read on a site?
