Two oaks came down on the same block in Perrysburg and neither one should have
Three weeks ago I dropped a red oak and a white oak on the same street in Perrysburg, both about 75 feet, and both came close to the house because my notch was set too shallow. The red oak let go about a half inch before I wanted it to, and I got lucky the hinge held. The white oak was worse because it had some rot in the base and I didn't probe it first. I took the rest of the afternoon and went back over my bore cuts on the stumps with a can of red paint so I'd stop and think before the next one. What's your go-to sign that a base is too punky to trust a felling cut?
