Pro tip: that hollow oak in Cedar Rapids took me 3 weekends to figure out, and the fix was 20 bucks
I finally got the lean out of that old hollow oak behind the school in Cedar Rapids and I'm still grinning about it. The tree had a cavity about 4 feet up and I kept trying to brace it with straps, then cable, then a whole mess of eye bolts, and every setup pulled the thing a little more sideways. Turns out my anchor was in rotten wood the whole time, which I only figured out by drilling a test hole after weekend number 2. I swapped in a 5 foot ground anchor sunk into the good soil past the roots and ran a single static line, and it straightened up in like an hour. My buddy Dale, who's been climbing 30 years, stopped by and said "you were fighting the tree, not the lean" and that stuck with me. Three weekends for a one hour job is humbling, but the oak is solid and the school didn't have to take it down. Has anyone else had an anchor fail on soft ground like that, and what did you switch to?
