Climbing spur puncture made me rethink my lanyard setup in Oakland

I was doing a eucalyptus removal off MacArthur Blvd last Tuesday and took a bad step, spur went clean through my saddle bag and nicked my thigh, maybe 2 inches from the femoral. Got patched up at Highland Hospital but now I'm second guessing how I rig my climb line and tool placement. Anyone else ever had a close call like that and totally reworked their saddle layout?
