Climbing spikes on removals: I was wrong for 11 years and I'll say it
For my first 11 years in this trade I would not touch a removal without my spikes on, even on a spar I could have walked up with a lanyard and a flip line. I thought it made me faster and I figured my gaffs were sharp so what was the harm. Then about 6 months ago I watched a guy out of a crew in Rochester take his spikes off for a big silver maple spar and he beat my time by almost 20 minutes, mostly because he never had to stop and reset a gaff that popped on thin bark. The real kicker was the stump cut. My gaff holes were letting water and rot into the base of the wood and one of the logs came back with a stain running 8 inches up the side. Now I spike the stem only once the lead is stripped down to where a ladder or a ladder and lanyard won't reach, and my legs thank me at the end of the day too. If you are still spiking every single spar, what made you finally switch, or are you standing by it?
