Chipped a brand new climbing rope on a fence cap, rookie move

Two weeks ago in Austin, I was setting a midline anchor and swung the rope over a galvanized fence cap without thinking. The sheath core showed right at the splice, so I retired a $280 rope after maybe 10 climbs on it. Anyone else got a fixed routine for checking fences and sharp edges before you commit a line?

That $280 rope tax hurts, man.
