Vent: saw a tech in Columbus use a butter knife to pop a pump seal and it cracked the housing
I was at a customer's place in Columbus doing a fridge call and the guy they hired before me was still there finishing up. He grabbed a butter knife from the kitchen drawer and jammed it under the pump seal to pry it loose, and I heard a crack about 10 seconds later. That housing was done, and the part alone runs around $140 online. He just shrugged and told the homeowner it was already cracked when he got there. I pulled the seal on my own call with a $12 seal puller and it came out clean in under a minute. Why do guys risk a $140 housing to save a trip to the truck for the right tool?
Man, that story hurts to read because the guy probably cost the homeowner way more than he saved himself. In this trade our name is only as good as the last job we leave behind, and shrugging off a cracked housing like that is how you lose customers for life. Anyone who's been doing this a while knows the right tool costs less than the mistake, so it's a shame that guy didn't get that memo.
