Hot take: pulling the fridge out to clean the coils is a waste of time, here is the 10 minute trick that actually fixed my cooling problem
Had a customer in Reno whose fridge was running warm for three weeks and she was ready to drop $1,200 on a new one. I pulled the back panel and found the condenser fan was fine, coils were dusty but not terrible, so I stuck a cheap thermometer in the freezer and it read 18 degrees when it should have been 0. Turned out the defrost drain tube was clogged with ice and gunk, and the whole thing was fighting itself. Took a turkey baster with hot water, cleared that tube in about 10 minutes, and the temps dropped back to normal by the next morning. Now I check the drain tube on every no-cool call before I even touch the coils, and it has saved me at least five unnecessary compressor swaps this quarter. Has anyone else noticed clogged drain tubes getting more common on units from the last 5 years, or is that just me?
