Warning: my 2002 cassette adapter silenced my car stereo last Tuesday

I was driving through downtown Austin and hit a pothole that must have jarred the adapter just right, and suddenly the tape deck ate it and started making this grinding noise. I pulled over, popped the deck open with a butter knife from my emergency kit, and found the adapter's head had snapped clean off inside. Has anyone else had an old cassette adapter seize up like this, or is my car's deck just finally giving up after 20 years?
