That old CRT monitor in my basement made me flip on modern display settings

I spent years cranking brightness and contrast on my 2003 Sony Trinitron, convinced every photo I edited looked washed out on other people's screens. Last month I hooked up a calibration DVD from a thrift store bin and realized the monitor had been set to 'dynamic' mode the whole time, which was crushing my blacks and blowing out highlights. Has anyone else discovered their old gear was sabotaging their work for years because of a default setting you never thought to check?
