Dropped $220 on a used Pentax spotmeter, and it fixed the one thing my film photos kept getting wrong
I shoot a lot of black and white on my old K1000, and for two years my skies were either blown out to pure white or muddy gray with no detail. I kept blaming the lab, then blaming my scanning, then blaming expired film, but the real problem was I was guessing exposure off the camera meter for backlit stuff. So I found a beat up Pentax digital spot meter at a camera show in Cleveland for $220, ugly as sin with a scratched screen, and started actually metering the bright part of the sky and the shadow separately. First roll through it, shoot at Box Speed on Tri-X, and every frame came back with clouds and detail I could actually print. The lab guy even asked what I changed, and I told him a 40 year old light meter did it. Now I want to know, does anyone else here trust a spot meter over their in camera meter for tricky backlight, or am I just late to the party?
