The week my swamp cooler quit during that 104 degree stretch in June
So I had my ducts cleaned and new insulation blown into the attic in the same week last June, and it was like living in a completely different house. The house finally held temp through that 104 degree stretch where my old rig used to give up by 3pm. My cousin helped me pull the old batts out and we filled two 55 gallon bags with the stuff. The one thing I skimped on was sealing the attic hatch, and I swear I can feel a hot draft coming off it at night. Did anyone else notice a bigger jump from air sealing than from adding more R value?
Air sealing made way more difference for me than piling on R value. My attic hatch was leaking so bad I could feel it on my face when I walked under it, and a $6 roll of foam tape plus some rigid foam board glued to the back of the hatch fixed it in an afternoon. That hot draft off yours is basically a hole in your ceiling, so I'd seal that before touching another bag of insulation. The batts only work if the air stays put.
