The tile guy in Albuquerque told me to stop leveling my floors before installing, and I finally get why
Last month I was prepping the hallway in my 1950s place near Nob Hill and spent two days trying to get the subfloor perfectly flat with self leveling compound. A tile guy named Ruben came by to look at a different job and saw my buckets, and he said "quit chasing flat, the old slab moves and your thin set will crack no matter what." He showed me how he uses a 1/2 inch notch trowel and back butters every tile instead, and said the little humps just get absorbed in the mortar bed. I tried it on a 3 by 6 patch and it went down way faster than my leveling routine, and two weeks in nothing is hollow. Has anyone else had an old slab guy tell them leveling is overkill, or am I late to this?
