Showerthought: the guy at the tile shop on San Mateo told me to skip the backer board and just float it, and now I can't decide if he was right
Half the folks I talk to in this town swear by cement backer board for a shower surround, but this old timer with 30 plus years says a good mud float will outlast any board I can buy at a big box store. I'm staring at a 1978 bathroom off Eubank with studs that are all over the place, so do I trust the old school float or play it safe with board? Would love to hear from anyone who's torn out both and seen which one actually held up.
