TIL I was preheating my air fryer wrong for 2 years straight

I always let it run empty for 5 minutes before putting food in, thought that was right. Then my buddy who cooks professionally watched me do it and said I was basically baking the heating element for no reason. Now I just toss stuff in cold and add 2 minutes to the time, works way better. Anyone else make this mistake?

Just tossing food in cold and adding a couple minutes works way better, same here.

Used to be a preheater myself @parkerb75, but after scorching a few edges I gave the cold start a try. Havent looked back since, the texture comes out way more even and I never burn the outside waiting for the middle to cook. You sticking with this method for everything or just certain dishes?
