Picked local OCR over cloud API for my receipt scanner
I run a small bookkeeping side gig in Austin and needed to pull data from about 300 crumpled receipts each month. Cloud OCR felt easy but charged per scan and sent everything to their servers. I spent a weekend testing Tesseract locally against a paid API. Local was slower at first but after tweaking the preprocessing, it hit 94% accuracy on my test batch. The API got 97%, but for my volume, local ended up costing zero per month. Has anyone else gone fully offline with their document tools for privacy reasons?
