That "free" VPN ad on a streaming site gave my laptop a browser hijacker, and here is exactly how I killed it
Last Tuesday I was on one of those shady streaming sites trying to watch a game, and a popup ad promised a free VPN with a big green button. I clicked it on purpose because I figured why not, and within 10 seconds my Chrome homepage changed to some search page called Search Marquis. My antivirus said nothing. I knew something was off when I typed a normal search and got a list of coupon sites instead of real results. I ran Malwarebytes three times and it kept finding the same two registry keys in AppData, so I googled the exact file name and landed on a forum with a 14 step removal guide. The fix was uninstalling a program called "VPN Proxy Master" and then manually deleting the leftover folder, which took about 25 minutes total. If you ever click one of those fake VPN ads, check your Chrome settings first because the extension hides in there. Has anyone else dealt with Search Marquis, and did you have to reset your whole browser or just delete the folder?
