My cousin keeps telling me to stop tuning world radios on Amazon and just listen more
My cousin Steve is one of those guys who has been on shortwave for 20 years and he gave me one tip when I started: search YouTube reviews instead of Amazon listings when you are hunting for world band radios. I ignored him for about 3 months and blew $90 on two units that picked up nothing past 2000 miles. Then I tried his method and found a clip from a guy in Tulsa comparing 5 radios side by side on the same antenna on the same night, and I picked one from that video for $65. It pulls in Radio Havana clear as day from my porch in Fort Worth. Curious if anyone else has a weird search rule that keeps them out of the ad trap on gear pages?

The "search YouTube reviews instead of Amazon listings" thing is exactly what saved me too, but my twist was hitting the ham radio forums before buying anything. I found a thread where a guy in Ohio posted his actual nighttime recordings from three different receivers on the same longwire, and you could hear the difference plain as day. Amazon reviews are useless for radios because half of them are from people who never even hooked up an antenna, they just think the box looks nice. That forum thread steered me away from a $120 set that everyone on Amazon loved and toward a used one for $50 that actually holds a signal. Steve sounds like he knows his stuff, listen to him.
