Serious question, did anyone else's botched fence stain turn into a desert sunset?
Last Saturday I finally got around to staining the back fence and it went sideways fast. The sprayer clogged about 4 feet in, so I grabbed a brush and just started slapping it on in angry diagonal strokes. Tuesday morning my neighbor Deb walked out to get her paper, froze, and asked if I had hired a muralist from Santa Fe. Now I kind of want to leave the bottom 3 panels alone, but my wife says it just looks like I gave up. Anyone here ever keep a mess like this on purpose, or am I about to repaint 40 feet of cedar for nothing?
That clogged sprayer rage-stroke method is how half the best accidents in home repair happen, and Deb mistaking it for Santa Fe art is a pretty solid review. Keeping the bottom panels as-is would be a great story, but 40 feet of cedar staring at you every morning from the kitchen window is a whole different thing. Once the new stain fades in a couple years, the mismatch will get a lot less loud, so you could always split the difference and just redo the top panels to match. Your wife might win this round, but let the record show the fence looked better before you fixed it.
