Got chewed out over my photo of a rusty dumpster because I centered everything, now I see it everywhere

I posted a shot of a rusted dumpster behind a Waffle House in Macon and someone commented that I put the interesting part dead center instead of off to the side. I moved the crack in the paint to the left third of the frame and suddenly the whole thing looked like a painting instead of a boring snapshot. Now I catch myself doing it with puddles and peeling signs, so does anyone else have one piece of advice that quietly rewired how they shoot?
