An art teacher in Toledo said to photograph rust before the city cleaned it up, and I have 30 rolls of film to prove she was right
Back in the late 90s I had a community college art teacher named Ms. Gorski who kept telling us that the best art in the city was the stuff nobody meant to make. She made us take cameras down to the old warehouse district near the river in Toledo and shoot peeling paint, rust stains, and water marks on concrete. I thought it was a waste of a semester, honestly, because I wanted to shoot real subjects like buildings and people. The warehouses got torn down the next spring and I never went back with a camera after that. About 4 years ago I found the envelope of prints from that class in a box, and the shots of orange rust bleeding down a blue steel door still look better than anything I have taken since. Ms. Gorski said the city would erase all of it inside 5 years and she was off by maybe a decade, but she was not wrong. Has anyone else gone back to old photos like that and found the accidental stuff held up better than the planned shots?
