Unpopular take: dead guestbooks are worth more than the live sites people keep linking here
Everyone in this community keeps posting the same thing: a homepage with a "last updated 2004" line and calling it a great find. I think that misses the point. The real gold is the guestbook or message board sitting one click away, because that is where you see actual people and dates. I found a fishing tackle page from 1998 out of Mobile, Alabama, and the guestbook had 212 entries, with the newest one from March 2002, and it told me way more about the site than the homepage ever did. The front page just says the owner moved on, but the guestbook shows when people quit showing up and what they were arguing about before they did. So before you post another fossilized homepage, check for a guestbook or a forum link first. Does anyone else dig through the comment pages before the main page, or am I the only one?
