Just changed my mind about old GeoCities pages being worth saving
Last month I was helping clean out my mom's basement in Erie and found a printout of my old GeoCities page from 1998, complete with a hit counter and a spinning envelope GIF. I used to think these dead pages were just junk cluttering up the web, and I figured the Wayback Machine was wasting space on them. But then I spent two hours poking around a still-up fan page for a band called The Smithereens that a guy in Ohio built in 1999, and it had a guestbook with 340 entries going back 25 years. Seeing people still leave messages there in 2024, like one that said "still checking in from Tucson," kind of got to me. These pages are like time capsules that nobody deletes, and the half-finished layouts and broken links are part of the charm. Has anyone else found an old guestbook that's still getting posts?
