Geocities guestbook vs. MySpace comments, one wins for pure chaos

I spent last night comparing the old guestbook on a fansite for Babylon 5 against some MySpace comment threads from 2005. The guestbook had people signing in with fake names like Zathras and leaving 300-word rants about episode 402, no filters. MySpace was just "hey hottie" and broken glitter graphics. That guestbook felt alive, weird, and honest. Anyone else think guestbooks had way more character than the comment boxes that came after?

Maybe it's just me but people have been saying this about every old social thing since forums existed. Remember when everyone thought LiveJournal was the purest form of expression and then Twitter came along and everyone said that was dead too. It's just nostalgia goggles. The guestbook had the same amount of nonsense, it just looked messier so it felt more real to you. And honestly the Babylon 5 fandom was always weirdly intense about episode details no matter what platform they were on.
