Set up a GeoCities page in 1998 and got exactly 1,000 hits, felt like a celebrity for a day
Made a page about my dog Rex with a spinning bone GIF and a MIDI version of "Walking on the Moon" playing in the background. The counter at the bottom hit 1,000 after about 7 months and I screenshotted it and emailed the picture to like 12 people. I printed the counter page out on our family's inkjet to hang on my wall. Anyone else remember obsessing over those hit counters like they meant something?
Did the number actually matter though? It was just a little script on a free server that counted every reload, including your own. Half those hits were probably you refreshing the page to watch it go up. My friend had one of those counters and we figured out you could just hold down the refresh key and jack the number up in an hour. So the 1,000 wasn't real fame, it was just a number you could fake if you wanted. Still fun back then though, I'll give you that.
