Paid $30 for a second phone line in 1997 just so my dial-up wouldn't tie up the house

My mom was tired of missing calls while I was on the modem, so she had Pacific Bell run a separate line to my bedroom. Looking back, that $30 a month was the best money my family ever spent, because I could stay online until 2am without my dad yelling up the stairs. Did anyone else have a dedicated phone line just for the internet, or was dialing in on the family line normal for you?
