My parents would not spring for it, so I mowed lawns all spring and bought the Sportster from a computer shop on Maple Street. Every paper I wrote that year came off a BBS in under ten minutes instead of the 45 it took on my old 14.4, which sounds dumb now but at 11pm the night before finals it was everything. Anybody else remember timing downloads with a wristwatch and praying nobody picked up the phone? What was your first modem and how bad was the speed?
